The Relic
The Film the relic is in the vein of such classics as Alien, Predator and Jaws, where a group of people be it space truckers, marines, sailors or the high class of chicago attending a galore opening of a new exibition, must defend themselves against an invading monsterous force.

The Relic is set in modern day new york but opens in the middle of the amazon jungle where scientist Dr. Whitney has just descovered an ancient tribe thought by the scientific world to be extict, the Mbuwn as he calls them have been living in a section of the jungle that seems to Whitney to be a genuine lost platoue where all of it's people, animals and plant life has either been declared extinct or has never been descovered before, Whitney collects many of these items and has them readied to be shipped back to the Natural Museum of Chicago, but on the night of there shipment he descovers that something is hunting down the "Relics" he took, Something that is prepered to kill to get them back, Something that he may well become. A Kothoga - The Beastial Embodiment of the Mbuwn tribe controlled who's anger can only be subduwed by the genes contained in a plant that no longer exist, a gene that is more commenly found in the Hypothalymus, a part of the Human brain.

The stage is set, Whitney fails to stop the shipment reaching the Chicargo hospital and the killings have already started, Enter Police detective Lt. Vincent D'Agosta (Tom Sizemore) and Museum Scientist Margo Green (Penellope Ann Miller), Can these two convince the Museum management that something is roaming the basement of the museum before the grand opening of the latest exibition, or will the Kothoga get it's food.

The History of the Film
The film is based on the critically acclaimed best
seller "Relic" by Lincoln Preston.

Lincoln Preston is actually two people Lincoln
Child and Douglas Preston, Two Authors who realy
publish a book that does not hit the bestsellers
list, it may come as a supprise that they are not
a well known pairing.

The film genesis started life with a very good adaptation of the book from the woman who wrote Indicent Proposal Amy Holden Jones, this was then picked up by producer Gale Ann Hurd who comissioned Miss. Jones to do a rewrite will three other screen writers to produce a shorter more compact version.

Many characters deleated and or merged with others, the biggest loss from the book is the character of Pendergast an FBI agent who became a fan favourite of lincoln Preston's work and reapered in many of there later books.

Director Peter Hyams best none for his semianl "Outland" starring Sean Connery and the sequal to Stanley Kubricks 2001.

The films location was changed due to the New York National history museum being unavaliable the cast was hired and filming started late 1996

Trivia
Many people beleave that the character of Pendergaust was deleated from the final screenplay but this is not the truth. In fact the actual character deleated was Lt D'Agosta, Pendergast was given a Chicago detective's badge and the D'Agosta Handle but his character, The way he act's and the things he does during the film ie: Staying with Margo during the finale are all pendergast, In the book D'Agosta's character is reduced to nothing but minor when pendergast turns up and in the film is portrayed by Clayton Rohner under the name Hollingsworth.
